relation to what happened here today. tonight, a nation in mourning. candle light vigils were held in newtown and across the country. there was one just outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today were children. beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. they had their entire lives ahead of them. birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. >> reporter: the president, incredibly emotional as he . a masser of innocent tiny children and the weapons used nothing short of terrifying. our susan candiotti has been following the developments today. three different weapons found in different places, very, very dangerous weapons. >> that's right. two of the weapons were found on the shooter himself n the classroom where he was found dead. one of th

, people here in newtown, connecticut, will head to church services to seek comfort and mourn the loss of so many of their loved ones. their friends, family members and many people they have known for so many years. we now know 12 girls and 8 boys were shot to death inside sandy hook elementary school. all of them were either 6 or 7 years old. among them, was emily parker. her father says she could light up a room and was an exceptional artist who always carried around markers and pencils to draw for anyone. her dad said he dwav her a kiss the last time he saw her alive. six adults lost their lives in that tragic shooting. that includes 47-year-old principal dawn hochsprung who was married and had two daughters and three st stepdaughters. one parent said hochsprung was always smiling. and school sipsychologist mary sherlach loved to garden. they will miss her terribly and take comfort knowing she had achieved that dream. the gunman also took the life of a 27-year-old first grade teacher who is being hailed around the world for her bravery. ♪ amazing grace how sweet the sound ♪

. we are mourning our loss, sharing our beautiful memories we have of her, trying to help her brother travis understand why he can't play with his best friend. we are devastated. two more little children laid to rest. one thing that we've been doing here is really trying to keep focus on the lives that have been lost. we're not focusing on the killer, he's gone, and frankly, we don't want him to be remembered. certainly not by name. we tried to be careful of what the families are going through. after sunday night's program, we got a call from the mcdonnell family. 7-year-old grace mcdonnell's family. i spoke with grace's parents chris and lynn at length. they told me who grace was. the light of their family. a little girl who loved school, her brother jack. a talented artist that lived life to the fullest. made the most of every day. i was amazed the strength that grace's parents showed, they say it's grace who is guiding them through these difficult days. here's our conversation. tonight, we honor grace, we will remember her. what do you want people to know about grace? >> well, grac

nation mourns and this is a significant moment in history. bar none, that surpasses any of the horrific tragedies we face, and the call is to action. i hope to collaborate with members of congress, certainly senator feinstein, very thoughtful in legislation with an assault weapons ban and there should be a national discussion that talks about a number of other items as well. closing the gun show loophole is really closing the general loophole. 60% of america's guns are bought without a background check, and there are instances where we might have protected innocent victims if we would have known what the condition of the purchaser was. we need in national dialog. i'm delighted that the president has tasked vice president biden with the effort. certainly he is one who can bring members of congress from both sides of the aisle, but more importantly, both houses together. we have to stop the divide between you want to take my guns, or you're in an urban area and i'm in a rural area, i'm familiar with guns, we've grown up with guns. this is a national dialog, not about the second a

. as newtown mourns, investigators are still trying to figure out what motivated adam lanza to go on a shooting spree, to kill children, and also take the life of his own mother. we're going to have more on the investigation in a moment. but the truth is, we may never know why adam lanza chose to go on a mass killing spree. we may never know why he chose to go in a school and kill innocent 6 and 7-year-olds, but we're learn aglot more tonight about his mother nancy and the relationship she had with her troubled son. according to friends, the 52-year-old divorced mother of two was devoted to her children and was especially close with adam who friends say was very intelligent but socially awkward. a retired stock broker from new hampshire, she was a lifelong red sox fan with season tickets who lived with her son adam in a large colonial home not far from the center of home. friends say she was a contradiction. extremely generous and friendly, but extremely private when it came to her family life. they said she did talk about the challenges of raising a son with asperger's syndrome, and

live in newtown, connecticut. a town in mourning to say the least. the images that we have seen throughout this town are heartbreaking. makeshift memorials on several street corners. everything from teddy bears to candles to flowers and angels' wings. it is a beautiful community here. just so quiet and pristine and you call it because what you can hear about newtown, connecticut, and it is so filled with grief. it is only the beginning, though, as this town prepares to bury those who were killed on friday. there will be so many burials. the first of the funerals begins today at 1:00 p.m. these would beautiful children, jack pinto, noah pozner. it is going to be a tragic several weeks. no one knew that more than president obama who came here to speak to this town at a touching memorial last night. >> surely we do better than this. if there is even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town from the grief that'ses have e visited tucson, aurora, oak creek and newtown, communities from columbine to blacksburg before that, surely we have an obligatio

common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. well, the statement went on to say that the nra will hold a quote unquote, major news conference on friday of this week. meantime, several national retailers are already making changes in light of what happened on friday. dick's sporting goods has removed all guns from its store in danbury, connecticut. all guns. that is its closest outlet to newtown, where we are tonight. they also stopped selling modern sporting rifles at all stores nationwide. on walmart's website, you will find plenty of guns but not the type of bushmaster rifle that adam lanza used. the chain has taken down that web page. at least 10.8 million new guns were sold across america last year, though. as david mattingly shows, the shooting here in newtown has actually just in the past few days, you can already see this, it's stunning, accelerated gun sales. >> reporter: almost 1,000 miles away from newtown, con

as a matter of common decency we have given time for mourning, prayer, and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. i think a lot of people look to that last part of the statement and wondering what exactly that means. in the meantime do we know if the white house is reaching out to the gun lobby. >> that's a good question. those would be strange bed fellows to say the least. however, what is note worthy is that the gun lobby's biggest supporters here on capitol hill have also been very loudly quiet if you will. they have been very mum, taking the nra's lead or going along the same strategy with the n republican ra but in private conversations i have had with the biggest advocates of gun rights, it is very surprising to me how willing they seem to be to go much further and legislating whether it is banning those high capacity ammunition rounds or anything of the sort, much, much different in terms of tone and ten or. >> dana bash standing by live on capitol hill. thank you.
